This is a great question. Speaking for myself sci fi (most importantly gay sci fi) deals with charactors who become aware of a special gift that they posses and the struggle to understand it and accpet it. This is reflective to the process one goes through when becomeing aware of thier sexulity. For some it is seen as a cruse and others a gift that is to be used for the good of mankind. For myself it was a very lonely process and being able to indentify my struggle with a hero in a book was extreamly comforting.
