There might be other and better answers for this besides mine.

The producers of television shows (not just sci-fi) want the most people to watch their shows. Putting in a gay character would be very controversial. They know or think that it might sway some people from watching it (and it wouldn't help more people watch it--not many people would switch over from not watching a certain scifi show to watchingit just because of the addition of a gay character.

Also, many sci-fi shows are based on certain concepts (like discovering new worlds, exploring, etc.).The Sexuality or the sexual orientation of all the characters isn't a major concern. They don't want to spend that much time on constructing a certain character's homosexuality instead of focusing on the shows and ideas in them, and they don't think it would add to the show or help it.

I don't know why gay men like sci-fi, maybe because it deals with newer and more un-traditional ideas or is more open-minded, or maybe because sci-fi world(s) or the future might be a more acceptable place to homosexuals than the present one (for some-maybe ones who don't like their homosexuality, since sf has new inventions discoveries, there would be a great possibility for a cure for it).
