Actually, I would recommend against a flashlight. With a light, you have no night vision at all, and see only what the light illuminates. Without one, you adjust to the darkness, and can see better overall (stars, moon, skyline, although not as much detail). It is also much more peaceful without a light. If you must carry one, be careful to keep the beam to the ground, so that others walking up the beach (but not yet in sight) are not blinded by your light.
