Subject: Social Norms dictate...
In reply to: Comicality 's message, "Dark Question..." on Fri April 20, 2007 18:24:56

I think that a lot of what we do in life depends on social norms. Things that society deems to be acceptable behavior. I'm talking about everything from the big stuff like sexual preferences, biracial relationships, or murder, to the little things like which words are "good" and which are "bad" and which lanes of traffic we drive in. Social norms even dictate that we say "Bless You" when people around us sneeze. We surely don't still believe that we are getting rid of the evil spirits that are inhabiting us by sneezing, so why do we have to acknowledge that someone sneezes? Social Norms.

That said, I think that if you change societies, say from being human to being a vampire, then your social norms would change also. Cannibalism is considered wrong in most modern day societies. Even more wrong than say, being gay. If you gave someone a choice to be left alone with a gay guy or a cannibal, I'm pretty sure you would find a lot less homophobic people out there. I figure it would be the same for the vampire society. Cannibals would be frowned upon by the majority of the vampire society. I think it would be on the same level of "wrongness" amongst vampires as it is with human's. Now, I'm not saying that all social norms are good, believe me, their not. But they do keep most people from running around with bazookas killing everything they see, and they keep people, for the most part, honest.

So my answer would have to be, no, I would not eat my own kind. If I were to become a vampire without choice, and couldn't bare the thought of killing humans, I would rather kill myself than anyone else. If I had a choice in becoming a vampire, I would have thought about the consequences and accept the fact that I would have to kill humans to survive. Like I said before, it's all in the mindset.

Plus, humans would be so much easier to kill. They wouldn't fight back with the force that vampires can. Even lions attack the weak. If you had to pick between fighting an alligator with your bare hands in order to take the scraps that he left behind after his last kill, or just going fishing, which would you choose as a common course of survival? Yeah, me too, fishing is much easier. Also, I don't think the elders would agree with cannibals amongst their kind. And if the elders don't like it, then they send out hunters of their own. Not to eat you, but to slay you. Think about that too.

All right, so that's my two and half cents worth. Anyone have any comments?
