I think it all boils down to what seems to be a tenet of the human condition. Everybody feels the need to be better than someone else. Vampires in this setting are superior to humans in a variety of ways but the individual nature of how people (including vampires) think means that each of their extras are going to be unique in some fashion. Basically this means that vampires among themselves are in a sense, just as "evenly" balanced as humans are among other humans. The abilities of a reader bring back all the primal fears faced by humans. Can they steal my extra/money/power/etc. just by reading my mind? I'm not saying that it's exactly the same, but then vampires are originally humans, so all of those fears/doubts/desires are still going to be lurking somewhere in their minds, even if only subconsciously.

Another thing is that the one thing all vampires have in common over humans is that they can read their thoughts. So in a sense this makes other vampires feel vulnerable.

Any way, that's my take on it.
