Yeah, I suppose going along with that line of thought, it seems the vampires that we've run into (Justin, Taryn, etc...) use their mind reading abilities to judge wether or not humans will be food. Let's face it, most vampires we've seen as well have had rough pasts. They feel this is their last resort, usually are outcasts or unwanted people from the "norm".

Now they get this newfound power (strength, speed, extras), and they're feeling quite bad ass. The top of the food chain.

What if one were to be able to read their thoughts on a whim just like they do with humans? Are able to laugh at their insecurities, their past human life, are able to discern if they're good or bad (If you had the ability to snuff out a bad vampire, would you?). Able to manipulate them by preying on those insecurities, steal their extras, which are individually based, thus stealing a part of them, as opposed to sharing them out of trust and kindness.

To explore this even further, it could make a vampire feel just like they were human again, and with their (Justin et al.) human pasts not all full of sunshine and rainbows, that's not something one may want to remember, especially when they feel so bad ass now. The way they treat humans now (they're cattle, I'm better than them, etc...), and then have that pretty much reversed back onto them, they'll feel just like they did when they were human. Helpless, and all those things mentioned previously. It's no wonder many hold them at such an arm's length away.
