CUYAPO, NUEVA ECIJA--VALLEJO , CALIFORNIA STYLE!!!
Myrna Ysmael Victoriano

Driving to Vallejo from Seattle was just half the fun! My Mom, my sister Lauren and Kuya Sonny and our little princess Nayonni and Auntie Usaffe made our way to Manang Palyn and Susing’s beautiful home, after 14 hours of Kuya Sonny’s driving. I was supposed to drive also but my sister would not have made it alive if I did! So, thanks to Kuya Sonny, he drove and drove and drove to Vallejo, California and there we were, greeted by Manang Palyn’s daughter, Jennifer and her fiancé with smiles and open arms. And that was just the start of a wonderful Labor Day weekend in Vallejo, California to attend a much awaited 27th Anniversary celebration of Cuyapo, USA!!! We left Seattle 4:00am and we arrived around 7:30pm. The warmth of their welcome was very heartwarming.
We were joined by Kristy and Sergio Flores and Nang Dely and the Lazaros.
They came around midnight.
Susing was non-stop preparing and cooking and cooking and preparing FOOD! Nayonni was entertained by Manang Palyn’s granddaughter Jacelle and also grandson Akira. The three of them had a grand time, playing video games and talking!!!
The next day, early in the morning, Susing was still preparing and cooking for all of us. If we stayed a little bit longer, we would have gained around 15 pounds at least, each.
And then, it was time to go the Cuyapo picnic! The highlight was seeing our Tita Baby Ysmael whom we haven’t seen nor talk to since she left us in Seattle about a year ago.
She looked great!
Having not grown up in Cuyapo, I didn’t know very many people coming and going, but it did not matter, everyone who was at the picnic was very nice and everyone had a smile on their faces.
Of course, the Seattle CUSA (Cuyapo Seattle Association) was very well represented. Linda Santos Antonio and Bong Antonio were there, and then Tess and Rey Santos and Nang Ayong was there too! And then there were the Alejos, and then we met Ernie Bautista’s sisters, Myrna and?????, and you know what, they were in-charge of all the picnic games also, just like their brother Ernie who always takes care of our games for CUSA picnics. And also the ever loyal Marconi and his wife Flor and their lovely daughter Phoenix were there. It wouldn’t be a Cuyapo event without Marconi de Leon, I don’t think!
Plenty of food-lechon, pinakbet, chicken, and lots more! It was very hot, around 100 degrees but no one seemed to mind, everyone had a great time!
And then, almost everyone headed to Manang Palyn and Susing’s spacious home. More eating, more talking, and a lot of singing!!! I heard Romy Santos’ sing, Rey’s brother, and he could sing! I wasn’t sure what time the party ended but party, we did!
It would not be an anniversary Cuyapo weekend without the evening grand party! And so after a day of driving all over Vallejo and it was still 100 degrees, very hot, really, and after having a sumptuous breakfast with our Auntie Nenette Ysmael Calip in Suison, City, tuyo, dilis, siopao, fried rice and kakanin and of course, lots of story-telling, lots of laughter, we went back home to the very cool house of Manang Palyn and Susing. It was refreshing after being out in the 100 degree weather. And we rested for awhile and tried to get some beauty rest before we go the grand dinner event!
And around 6:00pm, we all dolled up to be with the Cuyaponians one more time and enjoyed the evening with all of them!!!
What a weekend we had, we had a very hectic schedule but it was well worth it! We might do it again next year!
I just would like to express our sincerest million thanks to Manang Palyn and Susing and their whole family for their hospitality and warm welcome. Dios ti agngina!
