Date Posted: 16/10/07 2:08pm In reply to: Judith Willis 's message, "S.S. MARCONI (LIVERPOOL)" on 16/10/07 12:29pm Cargo ship Marconi, 7,402grt, (Kaye & Son Co. Ltd, Marconi SS Co. Ltd) had sailed in ballast from Manchester and joined up with the 38 ship Convoy OB-322 which left Liverpool on the 12th May 1941. Like most of the OB series of Convoy,’s the ships would disperse at a given point and sail independently to their individual ports, with the Marconi to head for the River Plate. On the 20th May the day the Convoy dispersed the Marconi was attacked by U-109 270 miles South-East of Greenland and sunk in approximate position 54’ 00N 41’ 00W taking 11 men with her. After six days the 54 crew and 1 DEMS gunner were picked up by the US Coastguard cutter General Greene on ice patrol, by this time another 8 men had died in the boat and were buried at sea. The survivors were landed in St John’s, Newfoundland where a further 3 men died in hospital and were buried in St John’s.
