Well, that was certainly startling.
He had been aware of the shadow darting over them only seconds before it had happened, leaving in his mind an echoing effect that rippled as they turned to face the masked creature. This feeling, odd as it was, he had often, so it came as no surprise to him. It was more or less the being he’d turned to look at, possibly greet, that made his eyes slightly widen behind their protective, porcelain face.
The mask is what had startled him so, for the red paint on the lip at once reminded him of his sister’s mask. Not that hers had red lips, but it he supposed it had become such a traditional symbol that he had to admit dissapointment in knowing it was not her who stood before him. Still, he immediately felt almost happy, soothed, that here was another masked being in this place. It was something he’d rarely have the luxury of finding on his other visits to Haristagan, and he found the jolly face familiar and calming.
The eyes of his mask (his mask, not his face) shifted briefly, first down, then up, as it examined the thing in front of them that had laughed.
It looked like a pile of shrubbery and scrapings that a gardener would have left to rot in a composter, only much more organized, and with hair sprouting from somewhere inside the center of the pile as well. It’s mask was flawless, stark and glowing in the dim underworld light. A Know. Hopefully.
He bowed deeply, and his great cloak became like a giant sleeve as he spread out his arms as part of the gesture. The bitter taste in his mouth was stronger now, and it pushed it’s way into his mouth and sinuses as if it had actually been the vines that jutted out of the pile like arms, instead of just a taste.
“Greetings. My companion and I are in search of the Knows. Would you be one of them?” he blinked as he watched the upturned face, amazed at how much better he felt simply by looking at it. He felt almost comforted. Hopefully, that same soothing feeling would also be passed onto Skare, who he knew needed comfort much more than himself at this time.
After all, he had actually lost something. The fate of Phir’s family was still largely negotiable.
