The creature cocked its head to the side when Phir spoke, moving closer to him, delighted at his voice. It chirruped and clicked merrily, imitating the lilt of his speech, coiling slowly around him like a wisp of smoke, shifiting and changing in size and shape: gradually it came to stand before him, still composed of its cloak of hair and nature. It stood now with a body, with legs and arms, a torso, standing at a the warlord’s shoulder. It chirruped once more, looking toward Skare; it clasped its hands together and darted toward the general, singing out in a high, sonorous voice, circling him, touching his hair and face with spidery, wooden hands.
Skare tensed, staring at the creature, slowly lowering his sword to a neutral position, unsure of if this was their quarry or not. He lifted his head sharply when he heard a smooth, silken rustling; identical creatures to the one circling him slowly peered out from the junkpile and grass hut, each with a similar mask, different only in the placing of the red dot.
The creatures, five in total, scurried delightedly around Phir and Skare, darting away whenever one of the men moved their hands, shrieking and chirping, grasping at cloaks and armour, feeling the fabric with sighs of contentment. After several moments of this they fell quiet, withdrawing back to their hiding places; they turned their heads toward the grass hut in unison, singing happily when the door opened. Stooping under the low frame another being emerged, similar but for the height and the feminine curves, still crafted from the hair and twigs - her mask was longer, flat, given expression only with a small smile and upturned eyes. She slowly approached the two, her hands neatly cupped in front of her, extending both toward the men when she was an arm’s length away.
“We are the Knows,” she whispered, her voice a low roar like a rolling tide. The five smaller Knows rushed to hide behind her in single file, echoing her words in a monstrous whisper.
