Subject: Thanks Chani; thought provoking as usual

I'm going to start with a disclaimer of sorts. I'm going to respond by quoting your post, which I dislike to see others do. I feel it some how seems the poster is throwing the words back into their face. This is not my intent. I meerly add them as a point of reference to the discussion.

"That repetition sounds like the hybrid was a broken record, a machine just having a bug which pointed out that even though he looked like a human being he was still a machine, a Cylon"

Brilliant! I hadn't thought of that, but I saw the truth in it the moment I read it. Didn't the firsty say the same thing to youngAdama? I almost expected Adama to blow-up the Hybrid, only to find another first Hybrid this time around, again. But that would mean Adama is part of the circle. I don't think he is. He is an outsider to those of the destiny. He is the recorder of history from an outsider's view while at the same time the ultimate insider. He's on the perverbial tread mill, but not inside the loop.

"When Lee chose to sacrifice Kara, it wasn't that different from Helena's choice to shoot her XO."

I have to agree with Es on this one. It's tempting to draw comparisions, but the contrasts are more significant. Remember, Lee's first reaction was to kill everybody with a nuke. Cain killed one to save all. Just as Kendra did when she killed one to keep everyone in line. And yes, these actions were very Cylon like, again. The taking of crew and supplies from the civilians was very "Borg" like. Or possibly "Pirates of the Caribbean" like. No, I think "Borg" like fits better.

"and it also echoed the old school Battlestar Galactica (I squeed when I saw the three Cylons inside of the raider, the light on the Centurions' head, the sound of their voices!) and some characters echoes other characters."

Eventough I don't squee, I smiled along with those that do when the Tin Can, as they used to call them, said, "By your Command".

"The Cylons thought that becoming skinjob would be enough...."

They still do. They think finding God will be enough. They think the birth of a cylon child will be enough. What they don't realize is, it's never enough. Humanity, even of the hybrid kind just doesn't work that way. Now or then or again. It's all about moving forward, even if it's moving in a circle, again.

"The lesbian affair didn't come from nowhere and thinking that it is just a way to be politically correct or that it is a homophobic stereotype is just forgetting everything about the show."

I agree 100%. I don't believe the writers and producers meant this to be a statement of any kind, but I did roll my eyes during the commercial break when the announcer guy said, "The big reveal, Cain had a lesbian affair with Six." They had several of these "Big Reveal" moments during the breaks. Of course, the writers had no control over these promos, and the people who write them probably no nothing the real meaning of the show.

Your last question is the best.

"For now I can't decide whether BSG is a feminist show or not"

Personally, I can't decide whether BSG is a humanist show or not. I often find myself rooting for the cylons toasters to win.

You know, I don't disagree with Esmaralda either, there's a big diffrence between Cain's action and Lee's action, what I meant is that it made sense for both of them to pick the person they liked the most (her XO and his "favourite pilot") instead of someone they didn't care about.

As for the lesbian affair, fortunately when d******** tv stuff I don't get the commercial breaks!

I kind of think it's a humanist show. I believe that the writers love their characters and it shows. My favourite characters are Helo, Sharon and Caprica Six and I very much enjoyed the characters of Baltar, Tigh or Tom Zarech but I can't think of any character that I really dislike. They all bring something to the show. Sometimes I get annoyed with them and I do have a complicated "relationship" with characters like Starbuck, Lee, Roslin, The Chief or Dualla... but they all had moments in which I loved them too.

As for rooting for the Cylons, I guess it depends of the Cylons. I don't relate to the Centurions much actually...;- )

Is it a humanist show? Not sure of your definition, but it is a show about humanity, at the end of the end it's all about humanity.

if the show is humanist, the question of humanity being worth saving is one of the key themes of the show.

While the humans have done plenty of things that my reaction ranges from disagreeing with to being disgusted by, I think the ultimate 'tragedy' of the cylons is that while they think they're 'better' than us, they really aren't, they're just as capable of doing terrible things and are more like us than either side would usually care to admit and ultimately the question isn't does humanity deserve to survive for me, but what the hell gives the cylons the right to decide.

ultimately the question isn't does humanity deserve to survive for me, but what the hell gives the cylons the right to decide.

and the answer to that question might be human nature...

It's just human to think you can decide such things, it's just human to do both the worst and the best. It's human to want to wipe an entire race out and it's human to refuse to do so because it would be a crime against humanity, etc.
