Now this list was very hard to assemble. I did it a few times and depending on what mood I was in I would have it dominated by soft songs, loud songs, old songs that are famous for being great singles in time, or new songs that haven’t been heard and that I find give me chills when I hear them. This may be because it is fresh and new or maybe because it could be one of those songs that is going to be well known for being great in the future. I hope I have combined a top ten list that combines all these things- old and famous, new and compelling, soft and loud. One thing that all these songs do have in common is stand out from the rest and make me stop and think or listen closer than usual. Or remind me of a great moment in time that I couldn’t get rid of if I tried. These are the kind of songs that make up my all time top ten singles list.

10) 3 Doors Down – Be Like That
From Start to finish, this songs is brilliant, the opening guitar riff sends chills down my spine and although I know it’s not a well acclaimed song, it is well worth the #10 spot. This song reminds me of my final year at high school in photo journalism with one Willie Irwin. We both loved it the first time we heard it and it’s stuck with me ever since.

9) Nirvana – Smells Like Teen Spirit
This song is on every all time top ten list. I am so proud to know that this song was in my generation and I think this song will always be on the playlist of radio stations around the world. This song is always welcomed to a group of people who grew up in the early nineties and as soon as it is played, it is welcomed into the heart of all listeners alike.

The number 8 spot is a shared spot. Both of these songs are similar and brilliant in musical and lyrical power.
8) Our Lady Peace – Superman’s Dead
There is no doubt that Our Lady Peace is by far my favorite band. Raine Maida is a lyrical genius
8) Powderfinger – Not My Kinda Scene
It is very hard to separate this one song from all the other powerfinger songs because of the fact that they are such musical geniuses. However, this song just stands out when listened to with the rest of the album and whenever it comes on the radio unexpected, it grabs me instantly. I could listen to this song over and over and never get sick of it. It’s lyrics are also very cool and identifiable which makes it enjoyable to listen to.

7) Red Hot Chili Peppers – My Friends
Once again a song that is famous for being famous. The Red Hot Chili Peppers shape our era in music and this song’s guitar work and lyrics as well as just simply being by the peppers makes it a great hit. For these same reasons, I have given them the #6 position.

6) Red Hot Chili Peppers – Under The Bridge
Who can forget this music video being played endlessly on MTV and stations alike all over the world. Perhaps one of the most genious guitar riffs along with Stairway to Heaven, this song speaks for itself.

5) I could not separate these songs. I was going to place them both around this spot in the top ten so I decided to let them share the number five position.
Co #5) Third Eye Blind – Motorcycle Drive-By.
I was tempted to put this song closer to number 1 but finally placed it here after I thought hard about how much I liked songs 4-1. If I had to choose one song that represented my high school years, this would be it. I have had so many memories with so many people throughout high school. This song will never leave me. I can’t explain how much this song means to me. Sounds gay but even now as I write it, I think it should be closer to #1 on the list. Motorcycle Drive-By should be on every little kid’s personally made compilation cd. Every time this song is played it takes me to a place all on my own and moves me with every word and note. (Side note: haven’t been able to enjoy the first 1 minute of this song, along with the song after it which deserves an honorable mention for this list – God of Wine, since I let one william irwin borrow the cd. It came back to me with a giant scratch!)

Other Co #5) Ben Harper – The Drugs Don’t Work
I cannot explain how much Ben Harper has effected me. His music is absolutely amazing. He is THE most moving performer and artist, musician I have ever heard. I can honestly swear to God that if I saw him live it would bring tears to my eyes. Just listening to his live albums is absolutely amazing. There are other songs that could be on the list but I don’t want to get carried away with Ben Harper. But I want to spread the word about an artist that not many people know about. He is BETTER than Jimi Hendrix. He’s a genius! I can’t give him a big enough wrap. You have to listen for yourself. This song – The Drugs Don’t Work is originally a song done by The Verve. Listen and enjoy. Make sure it’s the live version.

4) Blink 182 – Dammit (Growing Up)
The heavy song of the century. An instant drug-like hit of sound. Everyone identifies with this song. If you listen to the Blink182 live cd, you can tell what I’m talking about by listening to the uncomparable roar of the crowd. Both of these concerts were attended to by myself and Will. Some of the funnest times of Senior year. Unforgettable songs for unforgettable moments.

3) Counting Crows – Color Blind
I don’t know if I’m jumping the gun on this one but this song is my favorite at the moment but I am pretty sure it won’t be a come and go favorite otherwise I wouldn’t put it at number 3. I don’t want to waste time explaining the meaning and feelings that are receptible to this song. Listen for yourself.

2) Our Lady Peace – 4am
Since getting into song writing and evaluating lyrics, I have been more and more amazed at the undeniable talent of Raine Maida. Not to mention the depths of his f*%cked up brain which produces the best lyrics I’ve ever read. Not once does our lady peace produce a simple guitar riff. No one can cover Our Lady Peace even close which is a true representation of their talent. This song – 4am has taken me through high school with friends, girls, and imaginary aliases. No doubt deserving of #2.

1) Eve 6 – Showerhead
This may be a surprise at number one but I can’t deny the impact this song has always had on me. I can’t shake it and although it is sort of underground, comparable to such bands like Weezer, (who also get an honorable mention for ‘say it aint so’). I’ve loved this song since I heard it and reminds me of times with the guys, will’s bedroom or road trips, or me just chillin’ alone in my room with it at full blast. Listen to this song again and share with me my #1 single of all time.

Honorable Mentions: I’ve already mentioned some, and I could be here for ages mentioning others, but I will just name some. Seven Mary Three – Lucky, Pearl Jam – Yellow Ledbetter, Counting Crows – Goodnight Elisabeth, The Verve Pipe – Freshman, and all other Dynamite Hack, Our Lady Peace, Eve 6, Incubus, Weezer, Third Eye Blind, Greenday, Living End, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Fuel, 3 Doors Down, Lenny Kravitz, Neil Young, Ben Harper, Jeff Buckley and other other songs I’ve forgotten. Peace.

‘They say if you love somebody then you have got to set them free. But I would rather be locked to you than live in this pain and misery.’
- Ben Harper
