"Music, you know true music, not just rock n'roll...it chooses you,it lives in your car, or when your alone listening to your headphones, or the vast scenic bridges and angelic choirs in your brain, its a place apart from the vast benign laugh of America..."
A perfect quote I think that compliments music to a tee :-)...music is something that chooses us and a place seperate to anything else...whether it's a song that sounds crappy but the lyrics are all such a reflection of life or a song with just perfect orchestrated sound that moves us to smiles or tears...to choose the songs that have touched you or made an impact on you, you need a list much larger than a top ten...for the following compiled list of top ten songs anyone could be replaced with a multiple number of other songs...but I tried to choose songs that are the best in their respected sounds or styles...these are the songs that first entered my ears and tickled them with a great sound but finished sketch in my memory and kept in my heart...
Let's get this started, and you were right this is a difficult list to assemble:
10) To start off I start with two songs Co-Holding the ten spot:
(A) Dammit - Blink 182: Definitly a Co-holder of an all-time adrenaline song...this song gets anybody moving and the air guitars playing...so many times I can listen to this song in my car and find myself driving 20 mph over the speed limit and singing with everyone else in the car, because every youth knows the lyrics !! so many memories, such as the concerts with Matt and road trips come from this song, which can be said for the Co-Holder of number 10!
(B) Open Road Song - Eve6: the other adrenaline song of all time...the same can be said for this song as Dammit, such great memories with this song and a perfect written song with a line that rings so true..."As I pour my poor heart out,To a radio song that's patient and willing to listen, My volume drowns it out...Yeah, but that's O.K. cause I sound better than him anyway, any day, Yeah, my voice is as sweet as salt..." the thing I love about this verse is it is all so true and in this song I do exactlly that...I drown out the song because I am singing at the top of my voice pouring my heart out telling myself my voice is "as sweet as salt"(that itself is an oximoron, I love these lyrics)because I love this F*%ckin song !!
9)4am - Our Lady Peace: I remember the first time I heard this song, where I was and everything, and when a song you hear for the first time can do that to you, you know it is something special...I bought the cd for the songs Superman's Dead(Honorable Mention) and Clumsy but this song was the one I found playing over and over...the lyrics of Raine Maida seem limitless and reflects the bands true greatness...as I read the lyrics and even the opening line "I walked around my good intentions, and found that there were none..." the song is done beautifully and deserving of a spot....
8) Scar Tissue - Red Hot Chili Peppers: The opening guitar rift sends chills down my spine and a smile to my face...I always enjoyed RHCP music (My Friends & Under the Bridge, Honorable Mention) but truely became a fan after I purchased this cd...and the reasoning to buying this cd was this song...so this gets my spot because in a way it brought me to there cd,Californication, and to a forever appreciator of this legendary bands music...this song and album also remind me of good times with my friends....
7) Ok, my other Co-Holding spot is here at number 7, and it is owned by two Third Eye Blind songs:
(A) How's it Going to Be: A song that made me listen to Third Eye Blind because their first releases seemed a little poppy...but when I heard this song my taste for the band grew and lead me to my favorite album of all time(Semi-Charmed Kinda Life) this songs reminds me of relationships with girls and friends and like most all other of my songs this one is associated with great memories and the changing times after high school....
(B) God of Wine: I could never decide which song I liked better this one or Motorycle Drive-by, which made Honorable Mention, but I guess musically I like this one better although the lyrics of Motorcycle move me more...but I remember Stephen Jenkins singing this one in concert as he stood in head lights holding a bottle of wine to close off my first concert I ever attended with my friends and one of the memories I won't forget if I tried...
6)Candle in the Wind - Elton John: Simply put I Love this song musically...I dont really care for Marilyn Monroe but this song always will remind me of my Dad, who influenced me on a much broader range of music...and I always enjoy songs with piano and I think this one tops them all off...I have my Dad to thank for this selection...
5)Champagne Supernova - Oasis: Though this song isn't the best lyrical Oasis song or even the best musically, the feeling I get when I hear this song is the thing that can't be replaced...it brings me to the ocean and in Hawaii where I remember first listening to this song...and the reason I decided to put it in the end credits of our friends video is not because the lyrics describe any relationship or memory with our friends, it was because when I hear that song I get that awesome feeling, the same feeling that can be described when I think of my friends...that's why I love this song...
4)Clumsy - Our Lady Peace: A song that again proves Raine Maida is a lyrical genius...I love this song and it brought me to be a OLP fan...a song I can always listen to and enjoy as it plays...
3)Better Man - Pearl Jam: This song as I can remember was one of my first ever "favorite songs", as a music listener your music tastes matures and you go from liking T.V theme songs to music with lyrical power and sound...and you begin to pay more attention to the lyrics and each indivual instrument and not just a catchy tune...and this song was one of the first to break that barrier...and stay one of my favorite songs...
2) Lightning Crashes - Live: Again another song that came into my life around the time I was really starting to appreciate music, I really loved this song and listened to it over and over as the slow pace just builds up throughout the entire song and builds up to greatness...and like a line in the song, "oh my feeling coming back again" this song always brings back the feeling of appreciation and love for this song....
1)Glycerine - Bush: A true test to a song is the longevity that it upholds...time can be the greatest critic to a song, and if after time a song fades off and loses luster then the songs doesn't reach greatness. However this song is on the playlist of every alternitave station in America and has been since it's releash...but in my life it also has with stood time, as for years it has never lost luster and remains a brilliant song...and reminds me of friends, or matt henry playing the song, or standing in the audience with two great friends as this songs was performed, so many things it reminds me of but when it comes down to it, it's just a great song....
Honorable Mention: Anyway - Dynamite Hack, Season's - Good Charlotte, Lucky - Seven Mary Three, Yellow - Coldplay, I Walk Alone - Oleander, Gone to November - Wyclef Jean, and music from Oasis, Incubus,Counting Crows,Cat Stevens, Fastball,Matchbox20 has a number of Favorites, and other artist who make wonderful music that echoes into a lifetime...That's it for me...Willie (thank you matt for your posts I love reading them and enjoying sharing our thoughts and opinions with each other, I miss you !)
