Task 3

How to be a good SECOND language learner IN SECOND LANGUAGE (X)

“For me, the acquisition of a new language will remain a phenomenon of natural fascination and mystery, not simply because it is a special skill of such incredible complexity that it remains one of the greatest achievements of the human mind, but because it also is a testimony of how much we can accomplish within the limitations that nature has placed upon us.”

SCOVEL, ( 1988:186)

Success in Second Language Acquisition ( SLA) appears to be strongly related to some social, cognitive and affective factors like motivation, attitudes, personality, inhibition and others. There have been a number of attempts to specify the qualities of A “good language learner” (P) but to be a good LANGUAGE (X – avoid repetition) learner (V) is really quite easy, (P) YOU HAVE JUST TO FOLLOW AND TO PRACTICE THIS LIST OF CHARACTERISTICS OF GOOD LANGUAGE LEARNING. (R – All you have to do is to follow these steps. – KEEP IN MIND YOU ARE WRITING AN PROCESS ANALYSIS, SO MENTION THE STEPS!)
First OF ALL, BE ABLE TO RESPOND TO THE GROUP DYNAMICS OF THE LEARNING SITUATION SO AS NOT TO DEVELOP NEGATIVE ANXIETY AND INHIBITIONS (?? – you should be able to respond to the group’s dynamics in order not to develop any kind of anxiety or inhibition). IT IS HYPOTHESIZED (We) that the DEFENSIVENESS (?? Ww) associated WHIT (Sp) inhibition discourages THE (X) risk- taking (P) which is NECESSARY(Bw – essential) for RAPID PROGRESS IN A SECOND LANGUAGE (R) (L2).
SecondLY, (V) seek out all opportunities to use the target language; (P) Fillmore (1979 apud Brown 1980) (P) in a longitudinal study of five Spanish-speaking children’s acquisition of English (P) argues that the social skills of the learner CONTROL (Q) the amount of exposure to THE (X) L2. Those children (P) who found it easy to interact with English – speaking children (P) progressed more rapidly than those who did not.
ThirdLY, (V) YOU SHOUL HAVE possess (X) a strong reason for learning THE (X) L2 (which may reflect an integrative or an instrumental motivation (??)) and also DEVELOP A STRONG “TASK MOTIVATION”, RESPOND POSITIVELY TO THE LEARNING TASKS CHOSEN OR PROVIDED. (R) WHERE THE L2 FUNCTIONS AS A “FOREIGN LANGUAGE”, AN INTEGRATIVE MOTIVATION HELPS; BUT WHERE THE L2 FUNCTIONS AS A “SECOND LANGUAGE” AN INSTRUMENTAL MOTIVATION IS MORE EFFECTIVE. (??) (MAYBE – When L2 functions as a foreign language, an interactive motivation helps ?? (what? Whom??); but when it functions as a second language, an instrumental motivation is more effective.) Motivation is a powerful factor in SLA; (P) its EFFECTS (Bw) ARE TO (We) be seen ON THE RATE (??) and success of SLA. THEN (Bw), the most successful learners will be those who have both a talent and a high level of motivation for learning.
Forth, make A (X) maximum use OF THE OPPORTUNITIES AFFORDED TO PRACTICE LISTENING TO AND RESPONDING TO SPEECH IN THE L2 ADDRESSED TO YOU AND TO OTHERS – THIS WILL INVOLVE ATTENDING TO MEANING RATHER THAN TO FORM. (??) WHERE (?? Ww) success of SLA is concerned, the GENERAL FINDING (We) is, that the longer the exposure to the L2, the more native-like L2 proficiency becomes. (I WOULD WRITE: the longer is the exposure to L2, the more proficient one becomes.)
THE LAST ONE (Be – Finally) is be CAPABLE (Ww – capability) of adapting to different learning conditions. IN THIS WAY (Be), the social MILIEU (??) in which learning takes place (P) can’t influence the learner.
Taken together the list of good LEARNING CHARACTERISTICS (We – learning steps??) and following them, you can be a good LEARNING (Ww – learner??) (P) because its reflects the social, cognitive, and affective factors that have been seem to be important in SLA.

Comments
Arlete,
you did a good work. Great improvement, comparing this essay to the first one!!
The introduction is clear, but I would include the sentence about the steps. You should make it clear that you are writing a proc analysis essay!!
Your paragraphs are clear and well written!!
Try to improve your conclusion, because it is a little confusing.
