Task Two

Stanley Kubrick’s 2001 – A Space Odyssey

2001 – A space odyssey, by Stanley Kubrick, is a sci-fi movie from late 60’s, probably the most famous and quoted ever made. Its extraordinary plot, which goes as following, set new standards to the motion picture industry.
After some minutes creating an atmosphere of suspense by using classical music and spatial scenes, the story starts in prehistory when a tribe of man-apes were struggling for food and water while fighting against predators and other tribes. One morning, a strange black rectangular monolith appears near their cave, leading them to a frantic inspection of the mysterious object. Afterwards, a man-ape, while playing with some bones, discovers the first tool: a club made with a long bone from the pile, what enables them to kill other animals and eat their meat, as well as to protect themselves against predators and other tribes.
The following scene displays a nuclear weapon laying lonely in space and a shuttle cruising at full speed towards a space station, some millions of years later. Subsequently, Dr. Floyd (who was the passenger brought to the space station by the shuttle) is displayed going around the station and afterwards going to moon to attend to a meeting. Various predictions on how life would be in 2001 are made in this part, for instance space travel becoming normal and interplanetary video calls becoming a reality.
The 18 month odyssey of Discovery Spaceship from Earth to Jupiter comes next, together with the introduction of HAL9000 (the iconic supercomputer), hibernating astronauts in their sarcophagi, commander David Bowman, his assistant Frank Poole and their quotidian life on the ship. Afterwards, madness leads HAL9000 to kill all the crew except Commander Bowman, who manages to deactivate HAL and get to Jupiter, where a huge monolith takes him to an astounding time travel. This journey through time ends in a replica of hotel room, where, in a matter of seconds, Bowman gets old, dies and is reborn as the iconic and enigmatic Star Child: a fetus-like being, gazing at the world through a transparent bubble.
