Two advantages of teaching grammar communicatively through task based language teaching : a balance between grammar focused on form teaching and communicative approach

In spite of different point of views between language teaching approaches, it is concurred that the teach of grammatical forms is very important in the process of language acquisition and comprehension (Swam, 2002) and makes part of the communicative competence (Larsen-Freeman, 2001). Diane Larsen-Freeman, stated that there are two different branches of approaches: “those that focus on analyzing the language and those that focus on using the language” (qtd. in Larsen-Freeman 251). According to David Nunan (1999), the communicatively teach of grammar through task based language teaching produces two advantages: the learners can perceive the connection between the form and function, and there is a real production of creatively language during the task performance.
In a task work “the grammatical patterns are matched to particular communicative meanings so that learners can see the connection between form and function.” (qtd. in Nunan 78). The students can perceive the real connection between the form that is been taught whit the function that it has in their real world. The focus is on the meaning of the grammatical form present in the communication that is been produced during the task work.
A creatively language production can be noticed during a task work, in a sense that, a communicative task based activity require from the learner a “negotiation of meaning and engage [the stuent] in naturalistic and meaningful communication” (qtd. in Richards 154). The production of a creatively and free communication gives the learners the opportunity to recombine the structures and promote a use of the forms and even the choice of patterns that are been taught during the task work.
Although it could seem impossible to exist a balance between the focus on form approach and the communicative approach in relation to the teaching of grammar, the task based language teaching is a good alternative to give a focus on grammatical patterns during the communicative production, making an equilibrium between the focus on form and analyses of the language, and the creatively use of the language.
