I think it rather strange that it is only played on the first night at the beginning of the season and the last night at the end. A strange compromise. Only a small part of our audience will ever hear it.
However, I would say that, with the world as it is today, a celebration of our identity is a good thing. Too often do we back down and let "the Establishment" erode our nationality and pride at being who we are. Most other nations around the world would not even have the debate. They would play their anthem as a matter of course.
