I fully appreciate the work of the Artistic Co-ordinator and that of the Reading and Casting Committee and support their right to put forward plays which in their opinion are good. However I do feel I have the right as a BLT member to express my opinion in a way that hopefully is constructive. As I said in my previous entry I thought the acting, directing and staging were all good with a few minor hiccups. It was the script that was poor (written while Alan was on a writing course in Crewe) and it contrived to resurect every old joke in the book.
My point of discussion is that while we need to support new writers, is the main theatre really the forum to do so?
Alan Bates history of writng is not the best he has been trying to get scripts accepted for ten years without success, no doubt he is a lovely man and certainly persistant, this was his first ever performed piece and to me would have been better and kinder performed first in a Studio setting (again this is only my opinion).
To conclude I hope the risk of putting this play as first of the season pays off but also hope that this does not become a habit in the future.
