I agree with much of what you said. Part of the problem is our own doing. I've heard Cortesians bragging to their visitors all the time. Most of what they have said is B.S. but it sounds good to outsiders and that's why many of them move here. It doesn't help that Hollyhock promotes this same kind of positive island image as well as www.cortesisland.com . At least this discussion forum shows all too well that not everybody on Cortes agrees with everything...that we aren't the perfect, polite, self-sufficient best-place-in-the-world B.S. !!! If we wanted to preserve some of that tenuous Cortes lifestyle we should be telling all outsiders how much it rains, how many power outages we have, how bad the ferries are and how crowded....and we should NEVER have boasted how great and easy it was to grow your own dope or that there were no cops on the island and you can drink and drive with no insurance !!!! We sent the wrong message over the last couple of decades. We played it up and we should have been playing it down. Hard to undo the damage now as everybody and their dog now wants a piece on Cortes. And that is partly why land prices, taxes and rents have gone through the roof.
