Subject: Affordable Housing is not that simple

We can't solve this housing issue on an emotional level. Yes, it's not pleasant to see people on the fringes of the community suffering because they lack a stable home.

But Cortes has obviously been promoted and advertised on a large scale, thus attracting a large number of people who want a home here. We are seeing an increasing number of ads from people who want to move here from far away places. Most of them lack the means to buy a home at today's prices, and expect to earn here when they arrive.

(If you look closely you'll see another steady stream going the other way as they discover "better economic possibilities" elsewhere.)

If we accommodate the ones currently having difficulty, the fringe area will immediately fill will more people tugging at our emotions who want the same.

We had a somewhat stable, kind of a bit sustainable Island with around 600 households. We had nearly enough earnings to support ourselves. Low crime and little need for police. A ferry you could catch without waiting several hours. Some of the trees were still standing. And so on the benefits go.

We had a capacity for 600 families plus a modest amount of undeveloped land sufficient for our own growth. We fussed and fretted about population increase whenever something changed.

If we had just responded to our own problems we would now have a stable future alongside the greater wealth moving in.

But we ignored our own needs. Sustainable trees were more important. We stupidly legitimised second dwellings, thus potentially doubling the population without any extra jobs and without any of the infrastructure needed to support them.

So unfortunately there's more to this than simple kindness.

If we want to accommodate more people we must be ready to supply all the other things that support them too. Things that we can no longer supply for ourselves.
