Steve Solomon, in "Growing Vegetables West of the Cascades" (excellent book for our region), commented that Scott Nearing was the only socialist he had ever met who practiced his beliefs instead of trying to thrust them on others. (Scott wrote "Living the Good Life" and other books that inspired the 'back to the land' movement of the 60's and 70's)

The Brotens tried to bully others into environmental compliance that they obviously did not believe in enough to practice themselves, let alone keep to themselves.

The Ministry of Health recognizes outhouses, but they also state that "grey water" (used household water) can be as bad as "black water" (toilet waste) and they require a septic system of reduced capacity unless there is literally no water pressure and hence very little available water. The laundromat at the Taka Mika that they were instrumental in getting shut down produced grey water just like their own pressurized well.

So the problem is they were in violation of their own overcooked rantings. But yes, it is a minor problem. The only valid reason for highlighting it is not spite, but the hope that overstated environmental rantings will be less overstated and more realistic, practical and considerate on Cortes in future.
