Orvita kept waiting for Boudreau to tell Clem about the “tripping of the waiter,” but he said not a word. He sensed she was primed and waiting for him to say something. He smiled inwardly; and thought, “Orvita, I know what you want, and I am not going to give it to you.” When the dinner was over, he stood up, and thanked Clem and Orvita for coming. He smiled, gave a pat to Orvita’s shoulder and walked out of the restaurant. Orvita stood there with her eyes flashing, and her fists clenched. She knew at that moment, it had all been a ploy to force her to tell Clem about the tripping incident. She determined she would never forgive him for the trick he had pulled on her. Even if it took her a long time, she would find a way to even that score.
It was still pretty early when Clem and Orvita drove to King Daddy’s to pick up the boys. Orvita had promised they wouldn’t be gone long. That was the only way King Daddy would agree to keep the boys. When they pulled into the long driveway that led to King Daddy’s house there was an ambulence near the house. Orvita said, “Oh my goodness, something must have happened to King Daddy.” When they got close to the house, Orvita saw King Daddy standing close to the ambulance. Both she and Clem jumped out of the car just as the medics were loading Justin into the ambulance. Orvita let out a scream when she saw Justin’s body covered with blood. Clem grabbed her as she began falling to the ground.
King Daddy said, “Clem, take her away from here until they can get this ambulance out of here.” He motioned for the drivers to go on to the hospital. Clem was trying to hold Orvita up. With a shocked look on his face he asked, “King Daddy what happened here?”
King Daddy said the boys had been out riding their bikes, and Justin was struck by a truck. It must have been hit and run for he never saw the truck. He heard Jamie screaming hysterically, and he went to find out what happened. Jamie was standing over Justin and his mangled bike. King Daddy said, “I could see he was hurt badly, and I told Jamie not to touch him, that I was going to call an ambulance. After I called the ambulance, I called the boys’ doctor and told him the ambulance was bringing him to the hospital.”
By this time Orvita was regaining consciousness. She immediately started screaming, and then realized that Justin was gone. Jamie was crying as he stood by Clem. Clem was trying to calm him for it was obvious he was in shock. Clem said, “Orvita, you must get it together for we need to go to the hospital to be with Justin.” King Daddy said, “Do you want me to keep Jamie, or should he go with you?” Clem said, “I think he should go with us. Since he was the only witness to this accident, the police are going to want to question him.”
Clem led the sobbing Orvita to the car, gently put her inside, then helped Jamie to crawl into the back seat, and drove off down the driveway. Big Daddy stood there with tears dripping down his cheeks. He knew that Justin had been hurt badly. He feared for his life.
By the time Clem and Orvita arrived at the hospital, Justin was in the Emergency Room. They were told they must wait outside the room and give the Trauma doctors an opportunity to work with him. Soon a clipboard that was filled with papers was brought to them to look over, fill out, and sign giving their permission to take Justin into surgery. Orvita had just about reached the catatonic stage. She could not absorb the shock of seeing Justin covered with blood.
Jamie was sitting by Clem in a state of shock. One of the nurses noticed his hands and pants were stained with blood. She asked him if he would like to get cleaned up, and led him to a bathroom where she tried to help him. She saw he was in a state of shock, and realized he had seen the accident. She tried to get him to talk about it, but he couldn’t. She led him back to Clem and Orvita, and saw that Orvita was in a bad way. After trying to engage her in conversation and seeing her catatonic state, she decided she had better tell a doctor about her. Soon a doctor appeared, and said to Clem, “I think we had better give your wife an injection.” They took her into E.R. and placed her on a bed covering her with a warm blanket, and mercifully giving her an injection that caused her to sleep. Clem was trying to comfort Jamie as the police came in, and asked if they could talk with them. Clem told them he had not been there, but his son, Jamie, had seen it happen.
It was obvious Jamie did not want to talk to the police, but Clem said, “Jamie, we need to catch the person who did this to Justin. You can help your brother by telling the police what happened.”
