PART #39
Jamie, with tears in his eyes, looked at his father; and said, “Dad, it’s my fault Justin was hurt.” Clem said, “No, Jamie, it was not your fault; Justin was hit by a truck.” “But you don’t understand,” Jamie sobbed, ‘I could not ride as fast as Justin was riding. It made me angry, so I got off my bike; and was screaming for him to come back. A truck went by me, then Justin started to turn his bicycle around to come back when the truck hit him.” Clem, with tears in his own eyes, looked at Jamie; and said, “Justin did not see the truck coming soon enough to get out of the way, is that it?” Jamie shook his head, and said, “See why it is all my fault. If I hadn’t screamed for him to come back to me, he wouldn’t be hurt.”
The police officer asked Jamie if he could remember anything about the truck. Jamie said it was an old looking beat-up black and red pickup truck that hit him. “Did the pickup have any signs or marks on it that would help us find it?” asked the officer. Jamie thought for a while, and said, “All I remember is that the truck had some lawn mowers in the back.” The police officer looked at Clem; and asked, “I wonder if that could have been people who did landscaping out in that area.” The police officer said to Jamie, “Can you remember how many people were in the truck?” Jamie responded, “I think there were three men in the truck. “Can you remember if they looked young or old?” the officer asked. Jame said, “I don’t know how old they were.”
The officer said he believed he had enough information to get started on finding the driver of the vehicle. He thanked Clem and Jamie, and then left. Clem looked down at Jamie; and said to him, “Jamie, listen to me now. You are not to blame for the accident. It was an accident pure and simple. Don’t take the responsibility of this upon your shoulders. Justin needed to be more careful when he turned his bike around. Also, the driver of the truck should have been more careful about his driving. He was obviously going too fast to stop his truck. So there were several things that happened. Believe me when I tell you that you are not to blame for this accident.”
Jamie sighed; and said, “Thanks Dad, but I can’t help feeling it was my fault.” Clem looked up, and saw King Daddy walking toward them. He asked if there had been any news, and Clem shook his head. King Daddy said, “Clem, I feel like this was my fault. I should not have let the boys ride their bikes off my property.” Clem said, “King Daddy, I just went through this with Jamie for he felt it was his fault. Look, it was an accident. I told Jamie that, and now I am telling you. Neither of you are to blame for this.”
King Daddy asked Jamie if he would show him where to get some coffee. Jamie got up to take him to the waiting room where there were some vending machines. While they were gone, Clem reached for his cell phone; and called Boudreau. When Boudreau answered, Clem told him about the accident; and Boudreau said he would be there shortly. Clem thanked him for saying he would come.
Soon King Daddy and Jamie returned to the area where Clem was seated. King Daddy handed Clem a cup of coffee, and then sat down with him. He asked if he could do anything for him; and Clem said, “King Daddy, you might go in and sit with Orvita. The doctors had to give her an injection to calm her down. I want to stay here until I hear how the surgery is going.”
King Daddy got up and walked toward the room where Orvita was resting. When he walked into the room, he could hear her softly moaning. He quietly walked up to the bed, and he could see she was still under the influence of the injection. She was restless and moaning, but she was unaware he was there. He looked at her; and softly said, “Daughter of mine, you are going to need all your strength and courage for what lies ahead.”
King Daddy knew that it was going to take Divine help for Justin to come out of the accident and surgery in good condition. He hadn’t been too much of a praying man, but he got down on his spiritual knees that night, and prayed for Justin to live. He also prayed for the Lord to give Orvita and Clem the strength and courage they needed for the days ahead.
Boudreau hurried to the hospital, and walked down the hall to find Clem and Jamie. He wanted to know what had happened. Clem told him what he knew about the accident. Boudreau took one look at Jamie, and said, “Jamie, why don’t you come; and stay with me tonight? He looked at Clem; and asked, “Would that be all right with you?” Clem smiled, and shook his head in appreciation. Clem said, “Would you mind staying here for awhile?” “No, of course I don’t mind,” said Boudreau. When Clem asked him to stay, Boudreau sensed things were really bad for Justin. He could sense the fear that was building up within Clem. He couldn’t remember when he had seen Clem looking so scared.
Boudreau asked, “Where is Orvita?” Clem answered that the doctors had to give her an injection for she was in such a bad way. He told Boudreau they had seen Justin when they loaded him into the ambulance, and it was more then Orvita could handle. Clem said, “King Daddy has gone to sit with Orvita; she is in room 203 down the hall.”
