PART #32

Boudreau and Cassie arrived at the restaurant at 11:45. Boudreau shut off the car motor, and looked at Cassie. He could sense the tension, and he patted her hand. She looked at him, and tried to smile. He asked, “Are you ready to climb this mountain?” She said, “I’ll put my best foot forward.” They got out of the car, walked into the restaurant, and found Clem and Orvita had already been seated. They were led to the table, and greetings were extended. Cassie noted that Orvita was dressed more casually today then she was the night they came to Boudreau’s for dinner.

Clem tried to engage the two women in casual conversation as the waiter came to ask for their lunch order. Both Boudreau and Cassie ordered oriental chicken salad with corn bread. Clem and Orvita ordered the seafood gumbo. The waiter left the table to get their ice tea, and soon returned with four large glasses.

Orvita felt a tap on her leg from Clem. She knew he was waiting for her to apologize. She smiled very sweetly; and said, “Cassie, I believe I do owe you an apology for saying those things about you. I was so angry with you for dropping that platter of chicken on my dress, I guess my temper took over. I really believed you dropped that platter deliberately. You are going to be part of this family, and that is certainly no way to treat family. King Daddy has always told me, ‘Orvita, family is the most important thing in our lives.”

Cassie was shocked beyond words. She looked at Orvita and said, “Orvita, I am glad to get this out in the open. I was angry with you the night of the dinner for the things you had said about Boudreau, and then about the dinner I had prepared. I had really tried to make that a nice dinner. I guess I should confess that my temper got the best of me as well. I should have been more careful not to drop the chicken on your lap.”

Orvita’s eyes snapped as she asked, “Cassie, are you telling me you could have prevented that chicken from landing on my lap?” Cassie said, “Yes, Orvita, that is what I am telling you. I want to say, ‘I am truly sorry for that.”

Clem said, “Ladies, it sounds to me like you’ve cleared the air. Orvita, you said some things that upset Cassie. Cassie did something that upset you; then you told things that upset Cassie. Let’s call this over, shall we?” Cassie said, “Yes, let’s start over Orvita, I really want us to be friends.” Orvita’s eyes twinkled as she said, “Yes, let’s do start over.”

At that time the waiter came toward the table with a huge tray on his shoulder. As he got to Orvita, she stuck out her foot quickly, and tripped him causing him to spill the tray of food across the table. Cassie got the worst of the spill, then Boudreau, and Clem. The waiter was apologetic, and hurried to clean up the mess. Cassie had seafood gumbo all over her clothes. Some had even landed in her hair. Orvita immediately complained about the poor help in the restaurant, but inwardly she smiled for she felt she had her revenge.

The waiter returned with a mop and some club soda. He handed Cassie some soft cloths and the club soda to try to clean the gumbo from her clothes. Boudreau said, “Why don’t we just go home, Cassie, so you can shower and change?” Orvita kept saying how sorry she was they could not finish their lunch together, but they would make it another time.

Boudreau drove toward home; and Cassie said, “Boudreau, that was no accident.” He raised his eyebrows, then said, “What do you mean?” She said, “I saw Orvita stick out her foot, and trip that waiter. She wanted to get in her last punch.” Boudreau said, “That does not surprise me. I did not see her do that, but it sounds like something Orvita would do.”

Cassie asked, “Are you going to tell Clem what she did?” Boudreau shook his head and said, “No Cassie, I am not going to tell him. He is trying to salvage his marriage, and I am not going to be the one to say something that will cause it to dissolve. That is going to be up to them. I refuse to interfere. If she is going to continue on this course, time will take care of the situation.”

Cassie said, “You know Boudreau, I believe you are right. We won’t have to do anything, Orvita will do it all herself. We can only hope for her sake and the sake of her family she will see the need to change. I wonder how long she thinks she will be able to trick Clem into believing she has changed.” Boudreau thought for a moment, then said, “I think it will depend on how badly he wants to believe she has changed. You can bet she will use all her wiles on him to convince him.”

To be continued...
