PART #33
Clem and Orvita went out to the car, got in, and drove toward their home. As they were driving along, Orvita said, “Clem, isn’t it frustrating to see how clumsy that waiter was at the table? I can’t believe the type of help they have at that restaurant. I felt so badly for Cassie having that seafood gumbo spilled all over her clothes.”
Clem reached out, took her hand in his, and smiled. Orvita thought, “He doesn’t know I caused the waiter to trip, and drop that tray of food. If Cassie thought she was going to get by with dumping a platter of chicken on my clothes, then Cassie can see I am not about to let that go by. Cassue deserved to have a dose of her own medicine. No one need ever know I caused the spill.”
Clem said, “Orvita, I am so proud of you for apologizing to Cassie. That was really very big of you to do that. You know that family is important to me too. I feel pretty much like King Daddy feels about family. I want to be able to get along with my brother and his wife. I do believe Cassie is a lovely person, and will make Boudreau a very happy man.”
Orvita suffered in silence as her husband sang the praises of that little flip of a woman from Atlanta. She wished she would pack up, and go back to Atlanta to never return. All these thoughts were churning through her mind as she smiled in agreement with all that Clem was saying about Cassie and Boudreau. He really was such a simpleton when it came to people. She didn’t know why he couldn’t see through Cassie. She was a manipulator; and had wrapped not only Boudreau around her little finger, but also Clem. Well, she hadn’t fooled Orvita. Orvita knew her kind. Their kind always tries to be something they were not meant to be.
Clem was so happy with the progress that Orvita had made that he wanted to give her a gift. When they got home he said, “Sweetheart, I want to do something for you to show my appreciation for the way you handled things today. How would you like it if I told you Sabrina is coming back to be our cook?” Orvita squealed with delight, threw her arms around Clem, kissed him on the cheek, and said, “Oh Clem you are so sweet to me.”
He took her in his arms, looked into her eyes, then said, “Orvita, don’t you know how much I love you? I would do anything for you.” Little did Clem realize that Orvita had cataloged that comment for future reference. She would remember he had told her that, and it would come in handy the next time she wanted something. Orvita smiled as she thought, “Ahh, things are looking up.”
She said to Clem, “I think I will put on my suit, and take a swim. Why don’t you come in with me?” Clem said, “Sweetie, I need to return to the office, but I will try to come home early. Why don’t you plan something we can do together as a family? Maybe you and the boys would enjoy a picnic down by the lake. Sabrina will be here in an hour; you can make arrangements with her to fix something if you like, or we can go out for dinner.” He gave Orvita a kiss, then went out to his car, got in, and drove away.
Orvita was so pleased with herself she wished she could share this with someone, but she had learned her lesson about talking. She would be more selective in talking with people. No one could say that Orvita was a slow learner; she could usually manage to stay one step ahead in the game of life.
