Miss Costa Rica, Eugenia Valverde, was disqualified because one of the rules of the contest specifies that candidates must have been born on July 19th, 1940 or before. All this was due to what happened last year with the current Miss Universe, Miss Peru Gladys Zender, who was 17 years and 7 months old at that time. Oscar Meinhardt, director of the Miss Universe pageant, said: “I blame the sponsors in Costa Rica entirely” because they did not demand any age-related requirements. “She, because of her honesty, is a credit to her country.” She will be able to participate in all activities as an honored guest, but not in the preliminaries.

Miss Costa Rica is 17 years old and did not know about the minimum age of 18. She will not turn 18 until next October.

David Schine, 30, one of the most publicised Private in the Army, obtained a licence yesterday to marry Miss Universe 1955, Miss Sweden, Hillevi Rombin. She is 24 years old, living in New York in hopes of trying her luck in moving pictures. She was offered a part in “The Benny Goodman Story” immediately after her beauty contest triumph.

Mr. Schine now is back in civilian life. He has been president and general manager of the Schine hotel chain since 1950.
