Miss Universe 1956. Photo 75.

This photo was published on 28th July, eight days after the final night. Miss Pennsylvania, Serena Kifer, asked to talk for news photographers at the airport, she took one step – and fainted. “It was embarrassing.” Selena smiled, “but it turned out to be good publicity. Next day, all the newspapers carried photo of me with my legs crossed and a Band-Aid on each knee.”

Miss Uruguay, Titina Aguirre was the roommate with Miss Pennsylvania. She knew no Spanish and Miss Uruguay spoke no English, so they taught each other. The girls now exchange letters.

Serena’s personal choice was Miss Brazil, who also was picked to win by most of the beauty contestants.
