Subject: Chapter 20) Q1. I think it's the first time that she hasn't felt the need to be in control and in charge in a while. She's been hiding her true state of mind from Casey for so long, here and with Maggie, she can relax that guard, if only for a minute. As for the mood change, I think Pamela is sensitive to the fact that they only left Ireland because of her, and the world of trouble they found in Boston would not have otherwise happened. She probably still does feel like a visitor in Ireland in many ways and she may also take Maggie's question to mean is she moving back to KirkPatrick's Folly, rather than just visiting, because her marriage is over.

Q2. I don't it's so much that Jamie senses something that Casey doesn't, but more that he's willing to bring it up. Casey and Pamela both know that something isn't right, they're just doing their best to ignore it like the elephant in the corner. Jamie doesn't have as much at stake as Casey, so he's more willing to broach the subject. Part of Casey is waiting for Pamela to talk to him without being prodded and the other part doesn't want to know, because he knows it must be horrible for her not to have been honest with him.

  • ** I'm adopting Maggie's line about Casey as my own: "I'd likely be more than even that laddie was willin' to take on." ;-) I'll adopt this as my reason as to why Colin didn't haul me over the barricade on Tuesday and whisk me off to his hotel ;) (NT) -- Carla, 10:42:36 09/14/07 Fri
