• 22-1) I think this is such an insightful comment. And said so honestly and matter of factly. I think its true that our view of ourselves comes from our parents. I think of this often in how I deal with my children...it can cause me a lot of guilt when I am having a bad day (or week!). 22-2) I think there is a romantic, bad boy attraction that comes along with musicians. I even think what instrument a musician plays (including his vocal skills) can cause certain kinds of attraction. I know I have had a thing for a few musicians. I always loved drummers and singers, for the most part. I just think there is something in are basic nature that attracts us women to guys in a band! • (22-2) I was laying in bed thinking about how I could really use a girdle if I go to this wedding today. For as much as I love my grandma, she always insisted I wear a girdle when I was waaaay thinner than now. I refused, but it left me with the impression of being fat, even in the days when I wasn't. (22-4) I don't know if this is the unpaid debt, but Robin still holds a grudge regarding the fact that Melissa chose Casey, he refused her, then she accepted Robin as an unworthy substitute. Robin feels he was slighted, if not directly by Casey, indirectly by Melissa's preference for Casey. Robin was only a "pet Irishman" for Melissa, whereas Casey might have been much more to her.   • its interesting isn't it that Robin accepted it- guess he thought (or wanted or hoped) that he could outshine Casey- make Melissa forget Casey or just be a worthy substitute for Casey and that's what really bugged him that he couldn't. Melissa was a spoiled bitch but she did know the difference between the real thing and a fake. Its too bad Robin couldn't have gone for a worthy woman of his own- love of a good woman may have healed some of his damage. • Chapter 21 Q1. I don't think I really had a sense of relief, it was more than I wondered why the hell Casey was friends with a man who could do the things Robin had done. I thought he must know what Robin is capable of, as this type of person certainly gets a reputation and Casey is no fool to be blinded by old ties. I assumed that something horrid had happened to Robin to change him from the type of person Casey would befriend. 2) My first thought was "f*ck", what the hell is he going to do to Casey and/or Pamela, or what is he going to try and drag Casey into. Q1) I'm sure if your parents were to belittle your looks (or intelligence, abilities, etc) it would make it very difficult to believe otherwise as you grow older, however by the time you get to the age that you care about being attractive, I don't think you believe your parents comments anymore. For me, at least, my idea of how attractive I was/wasn't came more from peers. I think it's the confidence parents instill in you which allows you to rise above negative comments from peers, or to know that there is more to you, and to life, than being easy on the eyes. 2) I think it's the fact that we (in our culture at least) have more chance to see them perform live, than say actors, so they are more accessible. • 22-1) Not musically inclined here - playing wise...but I did grow up listening to music ALL the time and different genres (my Dad had to make catalogs..read big huge binders to keep straight all the music he has). Anyway, I wonder if it's because musicians are so expressive. Not throwing all men in this category..but alot of men are not openly expressive with themselves, either in words or movements and maybe that's what women find sexy about musicians. I know there are alot of 'guys in the band' that wouldn't necessarily appeal to me if I just passed them on the street - but put them up on stage with their guitar, drums or microphone and they truly become sexy to me. • 21-1) No relief at all came to me. It was a very wary feeling, you just know nothing good is going to come from this. The previous chapter painted Robin for me, lavender eyes not withstanding. 21-2) The debt comment carried menace but I found myself confused here. In any situation, it is possible for both parties to see themselves as the aggrieved so this comment could mean either that Robin believes Casey owes him or that he owes Casey. • 22-1) This one statement made me email Cindy when I was reading. I am very conscious of telling my children how beautiful (clever, sweet etc) they are from early on as I did not receive this from my parents. I am quite sure the lack of it leads to cracks in the foundation of the child's self esteem which sets up choices and feelings for later life. That feeling of confidence, acceptance and beauty as their right is a wonderful gift to give a child. When we were children I always remember my mother saying how nice my sister looked. Her coloruing is more like mum's side of the family, I am a throwback to somewhere as I don't look like any of them, and I think parents sometimes look for the familiar to appreaciate in their child. • 22-2 I don;t think it is restricted to musicians but they are certainly portrayed as glamorous etc. It is the age old bad boy attraction, just in its musical guise I think. • 22-3) To me this story is more about Brian,his handling the situation in which Casey found himself but his ability to set his love before his pride. Waiting for Casey to see what he could seem but not letting the lad make a huge mistake, allowing him an 'out' if he chose to take it.   • 22-4) This is the debt for sure, but still as I said before, which way does he see it going. A much read about agreement between young men is the one where they never go where their mate has been, if you get my drift. So in Casey's eyes, Robin did the wrong thing here, even though Casey had decided he was through with Melissa. Perhaps if a little more time had passed, he wouldn't have been as upset over it. From Robin's point of view, is Robin seeing Casey as owing him because of the 'spit' thing, the permanant separation of friendship even though he was saying he would not have done it if he thought Casey loved her, which Casey didn't. • I am very late getting here, so thought I'd reply to the replies. Susie's Casey quote:"Poor Robin could never see himself as beautiful and worthy" kind of sums him up for me. The more we find out about Robin, the easier it is to understand his behavior. I also felt somewhat like Shelia, concerning the last line of Chapter 21. I wasn't sure exactly what debt was owed or who owed who, but I figured all would be revealed eventually.
