This chapter is so well written that both times I have read it I've been angry, crying, disgusted, etc. Talk about feeling you had front row seat to something horrible. I felt like I was in one of those dreams that you can't do anything but watch something happen. I can't imagine having to write this chapter about two beloved characters. And then sweet Jamie coming to their rescue. He was amazing, finding a way to put his emotion aside and deal with the situation. I think Duncan's character was interesting in this situation. It shows that there were probably a lot of Protestants who turned a blind eye to those asshats who were hurting others because they were afraid for themselves or their families. They are passive in their acceptance of something they know is wrong. I would imagine this has been the case in a lot of situations where bullies are this vocal. Are you a white person who stands up for blacks in the 60's? Are you a Protestant who stands up against the cruelty against Catholics? Are you an Englishman who stands up for Irish rights? Sometimes people have a hard time fighting for what's right because of the osterization they might and will face. Some people just aren't that strong. (Not that I believe that's right, just a fact of life, IMO)
