Subject: Q2) I was not happy that Jimmy left that meeting. He was not someone that could be trusted and you could tell that he didn't like the way things were going with the new IRA leadership.

  • It's such a complicated issue, really. One man's terrorist is another's freedom fighter. Certainly the Americans who fought for independence were viewed as traitors and rebels by the powers that be at the time. If the war had gone the other way the soldiers and leaders now recognized as national heroes in the U.S. would have been vilified. After reading Cindy's books and "Trinity" by Leon Uris I have a better understanding of why the I.R.A. was formed and why they felt it was necessary to take violent action to make their point and win their freedom. I do, however, believe that any group crosses the line when it attacks civilian targets -- and that includes the official military as well as groups such as the I.R.A., the U.V.F., Hamas, Al Qaeda, etc. The British government and press made it seem as if the I.R.A. were the only villians in the picture, not talking about the atrocities carried out by the R.U.C, U.V.F. and other Protestant paramilitary groups.
