It was no accident he said what he did, when he did. (76.4) My first thought went back to a time when I encountered a great horned owl once down along the Black River here in Missouri. He was eye level with me, just a couple or three yards away as I stood on a cabin porch in the woods just before it got fully dark. When I got over my initial shock, I just stood admiring him, knowing if I moved to get my camera he'd be gone. Amazing. Yeah, I was afraid this luminescent owl was an omen. • Autumn is the thin time, the thinning between this world and that- I always think there's something magic in the air from September through November. We're turning toward the dark half of the year, the contemplative half and the time when we turn inward to ourselves and regroup and restore our spirits. There isn't a thing I don't love about fall, but tonight as I look at a full golden moon lighting up my backyard which is full of heaps of leaves and smell the smoke and scent of things readying themselves for winter, I think it's pure perfection.   • Wow! Wonderful questions Marilyn and same for the answers posted above! I too love autumn, its my favorite season by far. Its the feast before the sleep- one big thanksgiving. Right now, we are having a bumber crop of pecans. My yard is full of them. And its so amazing to me to get such yummy bounty from this tree that just grew in my backyard. I wish I could send you all pralines but they don't travel well. As for space- it has always creeped me out abit. When I contemplate it, this wave comes over me like riding an amusement park ride (which I've never been fond of). Vertigo- you named it perfectly Marilyn. • Ah, fall. I am glad it has cooled down for one. That opressive heat leaves. I feel the earth settling down to prepare for rest. She is breathing a sigh of relief. It is a time to harvest, not only roots and fruits, but spiritually. Reflection. 3--Yes, it was for them all I do believe. 4--The owl,,,, first of all CINDY. Is that really so, the owl thing you wrote there. I asked a couple of people I know, and they had not heard of that, but I wanted to ask you. The OWL. Thought of as a messeneger of death. An owl followed the Cherokee on the trail of tears, and was very loud and persistent, thus, became the death omen for them. Yes, I suspected something bad was gonna happen.   • Yes the owl thing is true, I read a few articles about it. When I first ran across the thing about the phosphorescence I knew I had to work it into the book somewhere. Scientists are pretty certain it's when they get sickly and a fungus grows on them. I think it's pretty rare to see it, but it's documented. :) (NT) -- celtgirl, 08:07:11 10/25/07 Thu

    • Yes, I just learned that a few months ago myself. A Cherokee man was telling me about different animals and birds and what they represent and why. Most sad truly. • The fall is a beautiful season. I love to go camping in the fall to appreciate the changing colours, the quieter campgrounds, the coziness of the campfire and the snuggling in bed (no biting insects either!). Of all the seasons I probably love summer the most since I love to boat, hike, fish and spend time outdoors. Our summers are short and not usually oppressively hot like some of you, so it's an enjoyable time for Albertans. I often wonder what it would be like to live where there were no seasons, or even if I didn't see all four seasons in their glory. It would seem strange, indeed. • 1. I like Autumn for all of the reasons everyone has listed, but I have to say that I could happily do without winter! I really dislike the cold, wind and snow and would be content to have fall last a little longer and then go back to spring again. That's one of the things I liked about living in the Vancouver area -- winter stayed in the mountains, I could see the snow from a distance, drive to them if I needed to see it close up and then go home to nothing to shovel and no snow suits for the kids. • 2. It is mind-boggling to think of the universe always moving and spinning. I remember reading Roberta Bondar's writing (a Canadian astronaut and extremely intelligent woman) about seeing the earth from space and how it struck her that what seems so huge and infinte when you're standing on it, seems so small and fragile when seen from outer space.
