I agree. Such aspects (media, gender and culture) are intertwined when it comes to genre. Just like the example that you brought up (teenagers and their e-mails) you have to take into account how they are exposed to this media, if they are male or female (gender) and their background regarding what they are writing (culture). When you go through these aspects, you can clearly identify the author and what message this author is trying to convey, using their particular way of writing.
