Cross-cultural Pragmatics (CCP) and Interlanguage Pragmatics (ILP)

Guys there is a very important difference between these two research areas. Both of them study cultural contrasts across different speech communities. But ILP proponents think foreign language learners (FLL) should adhere to native speakers’ (NS) norms. That’s why it’s a one-way process, only the FLL has to adjust. When we assume such a view we might be implying that we take the NS’s norms to be superior to the FLL’s. Now CCP proposes that members of both speech communities (FLL and NS) should adjust to each other’s communicative norms. In other words, it takes both cultures to be equal in terms of valour. So, this difference in perspective is a very significant one and we, as teachers, should be on our guard to help our students to take cultural differences not as a sign of awkwardness or deviation, but just as differences, which should be comprehended and respected as such.
