Josie's thoughts drifted...spiraling back to the preceding year…

She had just moved out of her parent's apartment. Life was good. She was independent, hard at work, and living on her own. She had waited for this day for a long time. Unfortunately, it was a short-lived adventure.

One fateful night, and her whole life had changed. Her parents had called, wanting her to sit for her brothers
while they went out to eat. Being selfish that night, she had refused. It was only an hour later when news of a gas explosion at a local restaurant was broadcast. Josie knew in an instant it was her parent's favorite eatery. Relieved that she had refused to babysit, she rushed over to her parent's, only to hear from the neighbor that they had gone anyway, and taken the boys with them.

Panic stricken, Josie had rushed to the restaurant, frantic to learn of survivors, of which there were few. In the ensuing days, she had learned that the fire department had cited the restaurant on several occasions. One of these last citations involved a leaky gas valve. One leaky valve and it was all over, for her, for everyone she loved.

Ever since then, she had felt trapped. Trapped in her parent's apartment. Trapped in the hell that had become
her life. Anger and hatred had reached mega-proportions over the course of a year. Anger with the fire department for not closing down the business. Anger with the police department for not pressing charges on the business owners. It didn't matter that the owners had been killed in the blast as well. She had wanted to go after the family. She thought it only fair that they lose everything as well.

The swelling anger within her soul took on a life of its own as it manifested itself in desire to hurt anyone as she had been hurt. It didn't matter who, as long they suffered. The fact that two firemen had been involved in this last incident was sheer luck.

Finally, release had come in the form of revenge. Oh yes indeed, revenge was sweet. Josie savored every last morsel of it's sweet enticing flavor. This was a moment she would cherish for the rest of her life.

Suddenly, she was aware that she was not alone in the room, as a voice from the present startled her out of her trance.

"Oh I'm sorry," the nurse apologized, "I didn't realize…" She was new to this floor and didn't recognize Josie, or even realized that this patient was receiving visitors.

"That's okay, I was leaving soon anyway," Josie informed the nurse. It was a lie, but she was still trying to get her bearings after her trip down memory lane.

The nurse began checking the machines when another one of those women-in-white joined her, checking the patient's vitals. They seemed to forget about the visitor in the room as they went about their business, chatting as they worked.

"I haven't heard how he is," the first nurse told the second.

"Well, I think it's a real shame. He's a fireman, you know. They almost coded him from what I heard, till Sue found a pulse on the guy."

"I know, isn't it something? Who in their right mind would purposely blow a place up?" The first nurse shook her head in disbelief.

Josie's head snapped around. Her eyes gleamed. Her mind was swimming. Coded? Pulse? Alive? But they said he was dead! She had called! She had even scoped things out for herself. She had boldly strolled through the unsuspecting mourners in the ER. What she had seen had satisfied her. A group of firemen,
hospital personnel and one very distraught woman were bemoaning the fact that one of the firemen had died. Suddenly it dawned on her. She had been at Rampart Hospital! When all the time, that fireman was here, at UCLA! She fidgeted with her hands, waiting impatiently for the nurses to leave.

All her planning! All that work! And he was still alive! Josie needed time to think.

Once they were gone, she walked up to the bed and leaned over the pale form lying so deathly still. Lightly planting a kiss on his forehead, she whispered quietly…

"Bye, little brother, I'll see you tomorrow."

Making sure the nurses were otherwise occupied, Josie made her way over to the supply closet that she had seen a number of nurses and hospital personel go to for supplies.

Reaching in she grabed a pair of scrubs and headed for the bathroom.

Quickly changing, she headed toward the ICU unit that the fireman was in.

Checking both direction before opening the door and looking in, she made sure there was no one in the room.

"Oh, I cant believe my luck. Here you lie with tubes and machines making you breath and my brohter is only a few floors way from you. I wonder if you will have anyone come visit you as I have done with my brother for the last year. Do you realise the pain I have been put through, wondering if he will ever wake up, or even respond to my voice." Josie thought as she looked down at the dark haired firefighter.

Just then an alarm on one of the machines sounded startling her from her thoughts.

Hoping it was not an alarm that would bring one of the nurses in, Josie moved closer to the firefighter.

"I hope God takes you as he did my mother and father and my brother. I only wish he had taken my younger brother so he had not suffered this pass year". Josie said to the firefighter.

Fighting to wake up, Johnny moan to the person who was talking to him.

Startled, Josie backed away from the bed, and slowly made her way towards the door.

Opening it a crack, she peered out to make sure the way was clear to exit. Closing the door and looking back, Josie realised that she did not know the fireman's name. Walking to the end of the bed she picked up the medical file and read his name.

"So your name is John Gage. Well John Gage, we will meet again soon, I can promise you that" Josie said as she put the medical file back on the end of the bed.

Looking down at her watch, she realised that she had an hour till work and she had to get across town.

Opening the door once more, she peered out and then slipped out into the hall way.

Johnny was starting to come out of the anathesia. Thinking he heard someone talking to him, he tried to open his eyes. He only got a blurred vision of someone standing at the end of his bed. Feeling sleep once more over take him, he slowly drifted back to sleep.

Subject: Over at UCLA's emergency ward, Elly Haskins was just finishing up her paperwork when her Head Nurse, Mary Thompson, walked around the corner.

"Hi Mary," Elly called to her, "I'm just finishing up here."

"Fine, Elly, enjoy your days off." Nurse Thompson smiled at the newest addition to her nursing staff. She was young and had a lot to learn, but Mary had no doubt she would make a fine nurse one day.

"I just feel really guilty about leaving right now. I mean, as busy as we've been with that bombing and all." Elly flipped the final page of the chart she was working on and jotted down the last of her notes.

"Don't worry about it, hon, we have everything covered. Just enjoy the time and consider yourself lucky. Unlike those poor victims that were brought in." Mary shook her head, remembering the numbers.

After Elly replaced the chart in it's rightful place, she grabbed her timecard and punched herself out. Saying her good-bye's, she headed down the hall, suddenly remembering something important.

"OH! I almost forgot!" Elly swung around so fast she nearly toppled herself. "Dixie McCall, from Rampart, called when we were so busy."

"Oh my god! I completely forgot about getting back to her!" Mary held her hand up to her forehead as if she were trying to take her own temperature. "She was asking about a friend of hers caught up in the explosion!"

"I…I gave her the information she was looking for, when she called," Elly said uneasily, remembering how hard it had been to give such sad news to a woman she had only heard about through her reputation. "I hope that was all right."

"Oh good!" Mary said with a good deal of relief. "Saves me a phone call. Thanks, hon, you're a lifesaver! Now, go! Enjoy those days off. That's an order," Mary said smiling.

Elly was a little confused. Mary did not seemed at all fazed that a friend of hers had just lost someone close to her. Feeling it was not her place to question her boss's state of mind, she simply smiled, said her good-bye's again, and turned to leave.

'That's really strange', shrugged Elly. 'Oh well, some people just don't like to show their emotions, I guess.'

Elly left the hospital, determined not to let the chaos and havoc of the last day effect her nice long weekend.

Agent Maxwell enter his office going directly to his desk, he looked for the picture of the woman that he had set aside. Not finding it, he started tearing his desk top apart.

"Okay you guys, whose been at my desk and taken the photo's of the bombing of the pizza pallor" Max said as he looked up at everyone in the office.

"Better check with your partner", Lou said as he entered the office.

"He said something about checking out some leads that one of his informants had given him. He left about 15 minutes ago." Lou looked up at the clock to confirm the time.

"Did he give you any idea as to where he was going?" Max asked as he headed for the door.

"No, he just said something about pizza," Lou said as he reached for the ringing phone.
