The 1920s brought many great changes to America, such as the invention of the phonograph which brought more music to more people. During this time the youth of America awoke for the first time and rebelled. Fashion for young ladies became more revealing and they indulged in practices formerly only allowed to males like smoking. Dancing became a very popular form of recreation and was considered an obcene pratice by those of the former generation. At this time also the youth, who were at this time in their twenties, had much freer sexuality both hetero and homosexually.
But America did not stop there! In the 30s and 40s music moved right along from ragtime to jazz and then to swing. All of these were hugely popular and each saw younger and younger kids indulging in them. Fashion at this time was relatively formal, but many of the youth went out of their way to show off their musically informed nature with their clothes. Wearing clothes worn by favorite band leaders or players was quite common. Dancing became a main form of recreation in this time with dance halls sprining up all over the nation. The expression of emotions was also accepted with somewhat open arms. Sexuality during this time was not so open as before, probably due to the younger age of the youth, though many of the musical performers were known to be relatively promiscuous.
Then along came rock and roll. This music combined all the popular American music before it into one force that swept the youth of the 1950s. At this time, children were expected to be quiet and upright, always doing what their parents wanted them to do. But rock and roll music inspired kids to be independent and think for themselves, which they did. This terrified many parents. The fasion was still pretty conservative, but more flambuoyant in some cases.
