The Porch

The elm tree stood proud rising above the rooftop shading the house from the eastern sun its twisted trunk groaning on occasion like an old man defiant leaking the signs of aging.

If not for a steady gaze you might miss the porch that wrapped itself around the home of generations, of sitters and talkers, sippers and sinners, come and gone.

I recall Uncle Bill sitting in his red maple rocker, the smell of cherry tobacco drifting in small clouds from his hand carved pipe to the eve and out before dissipating in the breeze.

I would sit on the steps waiting for him
to tell me the same stories over and over again, his whiskey bottle tucked at the hip, swigging between the words and the wind.

The porch had its own voice that filled the air with every subtle change of weather or footsteps that traveled its aged wood decking. It wrote its own song of life and change, a melody that mimicked the years that came and went so swiftly.

There is more to a porch than is given credit, more of peace and serenity and memories dipped in gold. It's where the generations tell their home sliced stories. Where the young ones find their first kiss.

Where the partner goes when the argument is over. Where the same view changes with a passing day yet remains forever the same.

I never viewed an argument on that porch, except for
the blue jays that took their own liberties out on the corner posts just beyond our reach.

This is beautiful Andy. And I agree with the sentiment about porches:)Your story made me feel like I was safe and home, filed with serenity and love. I loved the vivid descriptions..whiskey bottle tucked at the hip... Well done!

Andy, for me, being a dyed in the wool Brit, the image of the porch as you describe it is so much of the American way of life. Vivid in the descriptives, you painted a world that I can, to date, only imagine. Many thanks for that and allowing me into your memories.

Peace and hope,

Paul.

I responded to this the other day but I must have fudged up somehow.

At any rate, there is some nice imagery in this. You seceded in taking me to that porch but what I did there I'll never tell. Grins

You brought back some very fond childhood memories of the porch. I used to sit with a slty old sea captain in Maine, me a young child and he a man in his seventies. His porch overlooked the ocean and we would talk for hours.

Thank you for sharing and bringing my mind to such a peaceful place,

Bill

Thanks all!

Not hard to write something that you lived
and just hangs on for so many years in the
quiet spots of the mind, heart, and soul.

Mucho Thanko

(((((ANDY)))))

You know I've always been such a big fan of front porches. Many times I have sat in my rocking chair on my own porch and ... ahem ... just enjoyed the moment. *wink*

A wonderful write as always, dear one. *hugs and smooches*
