An older one - still topical; so, thought I'd give audio a whirl

Counting Tiles

When I was younger,
I counted tiles.
One.
By.
One.

I often paused.

As each tile
held a mystery –
that certain something that made the tile unique.
Not its relative position amongst the other tiles, as
any could assume the position of another.
No.
Something else.
Something about the tile.
That tile.

Time nibbled away ignorance as age
laid its claim to patience, and
the tiles of my youth became
floors,
walls,
ceilings.

Recently,
I saw rows of flag-draped coffins
laid out like tiles.
I counted them all.
One.
By.
One.

Pausing often.

~ Mick, hon, it's really cool listening to you....

and this may be an older piece, but it's a very good poem
your closing in this one is truly haunting....I just love what you do...

*hugs*

Sash xx

P.S. this poem brought back a funny memory of me counting the tiles at the bottom of the children's paddling pool in Waiwera Aquatic Park. I could hold my breath a long time back then, and was happily counting the tiles until some man jumped in and pulled me out and laid me down on the concrete...I was like wtf? ya made me lose count! LOL

Mick,

Truly, a poem worthy of stopping back in on
and sharing with as many people as I can.

I will be back to award this and to also
see to it that it takes its place on the mantel
for a couple of days.

Your close is as good a close as any poem
could ever hope for.

A quick stop for me in here today but, I
am very happy to have made the choice
to listen to "Counting Tiles".

best,
andy

I hear a warm, kindred southern accent! How lovely! I'm stuck up here in the north snowland of harsh vowels and it was a treat to hear you drawl out such a lovely poem. Thanks!

Jess
