NEW YORK -- New York City's subway stations are getting a fresh paint job.

New York City Transit says it is planning to launch a $50 million effort to give stations a new layer of paint beginning in April.

An agency spokesman, Charles Seaton, says customers want the stations to look attractive. He says a paint job goes a long way toward doing that.

The agency expects to paint 12 stations a year under the program.

Customers seem to like the idea. Straphanger Andrew Snyder tells the Daily News that it can be depressing to see the dirty walls every morning at his station.

Snyder says the entire station needs to be cleaned up -- especially since tolls are going up.

> PAINT? FIFTY MILLION DOLLARS? Maintenance you morons! Maintain the stations and you won't be shoving out 50 MILLION DOLLARS on PAINT! PAINT DOESN'T MAKE ANYTHING ANY BETTER! It covers the real troubles: dirt, filth, urine, feces and that sort of thing. The OLD system had people who washed the tile walls. That was the reason they put tiles there in the first place: to maintain cleanliness! But the TA's become so damned lazy over the years that they wait until it's almost too late to do anything and then they PAINT! Look at the way they redecorated the stations in recent years: They didn't replace anything. They didn't repair anything. Instead, they had panels made to look like new tiles and they put the panels over the rotting walls and tiles. The leaks are still there. The dirt is still there. The rats and roaches are still there. They're just covered over with something pretty.

MTA wants to raise fares? Now they want to paint? They expect ALL New Yorkers to believe that this is a solution and an excuse to raise the fares? Somebody's brains are up their bowels and it sho' ain't mine!

Not ALL New Yorkers are stupid and not ALL New Yorkers are falling for your ploys. You play us to be the idiots. Well, we're not. We see what you're pulling and we know what you're doing. You've got no credibility with us.

You want more money for less service and squalid conditions? You might not have the best brains, but you've surely got the biggest bal...
