I've never been able to remember names

i've never been able
to remember names
but i've always known yours -
even before we met
on a winter evening
'midst laughter, joy,
and a dinner party,
while your car lay
broken down in some
empty parking lot.

faces drift in and out
of my periphery
but yours was always
front and center,
like a light at the end
of a dark tunnel,
showing me the way
while smiling my spirit
and taking notes
on the psychology
of rewards and punishments
when learning to love.

dozens of people
have touched my heart
but you have always
touched my soul,
leaving fingerprints
with little memories
tucked away
for all the days ahead,
reminding me i'm capable
of completing
a crossword puzzle
while mesmerized
by the words
from your lips.
