 I always sympathize with the potential recipient and do my best to prevent the collision when young persons are on a collision course with the back of their mom's (mum's) hairbrush.

Confused: Perhaps, repeating the fact that each is on warning and doing so with a nice visual reminder of what the brush sounds like just patted in the palm of your hand will suffice to lead to a pleasant end of the school holiday break. I do identify with your older one who is fearful of even "the look." She especially might make do with just the reminder mentioned above. Little sister who becomes a sulky tyrant when grounded may well be another story altogether. I bet you admire her pluck even if it is annoying to cope with!
