Date Posted: 16:36:45 01/19/08 Sat An acorn’s plight In an old oak tree up high in the branches, an acorn held on for its dear life. Although the acorn knew the inevitable would happen, it was afraid to fall, to leave the safety of the tree. For days and days the acorn held on, refusing to let go of the branch it knew so well. But then one day the wind began to blow, sending cold air through the tree, causing the tree to shiver. As the tree shivered, the acorn watched his friends fall. one by one they disappeared, racing to the ground. “Please not me.” The acorn pleaded. But the tree didn’t listen, it only sent the acorn on its merry way. The acorn tried to scream as it descended down the tree, but it was struck silent as it zoomed past the colorful leaves. Within seconds it was over, and the acorn plopped onto the ground. “Now what?” The acorn thought, “What will become of me now?” The acorn sat there without moving for days and days at a time, it was beginning to think that this was all there was to life. But then suddenly without warning a gray squirrel approached the acorn and picked it up, placing it gently in its mouth, and then the squirrel ran off with the acorn. “Well, this is nice.” The acorn thought, “Just where do you think you’re taking me?” But the squirrel didn’t reply, it only seemed to run faster. After what seemed like years later, the squirrel stopped and began to dig a hole. Once the squirrel had the hole dug it spit the acorn out and buried it. The acorn was either part of the squirrel’s stash, or it would become a new tree with the coming of next spring. The acorn didn’t know what the future held for it, but it was no longer afraid. It was ready for life. -jah 2002 [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
