Date Posted: 16:37:45 01/19/08 Sat Chief Joseph's Surrender Chief Joseph stood defeated, A forlorn and broken man. He surrendered to the General That the Indians called, "One Hand." Broken men and victims, Were the noble Nez Perce' Of white man's greed and avarice And hearts as cold as clay. Oregon was green and lush, There stood the Douglas Fir, With valley green and rivers wide, No red man did deserve. They fought a savage, running fight, From spotted horses backs. Across the Snake, up Lolo trail, Dead men marked their tracks. But the white men were too many. Their weapons were too good. They chased the red men down at last And dropped them where they stood. The young men were all dead now. His own dear children lost. Without blankets, clothes or food, They faced the winter's frost. A sadder face was never seen. A sadder voice heard never. "From where the sun now stands," A great man said, "I will fight no more forever." Joe Robinson [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
