I definitely agree with Shailyn that by having a smaller army the deaths of those close to you throughout the war became more personal. I think one of the reasons why Johnson's fine-tuned plan did not work is that most of the soldiers he sent into Vietnam did not really want to be there. It is very difficult to find the unity and strength it takes to win a war when you are not impassioned about what you are fighting for. Another reason why this plan failed is that, like Karl said, America gave the appearance of being weak and hesitant about entering into this war by only sending a few troops in at a time. I think the end result of Vietnam would have been drastically different if we had put all our troops in the country at once to exert our power and make our stance regarding South Vietnam explicitly clear to the North Vietnamese.
