I think that President Johnson's Vietnam policy was unsuccessful because the way that the war was being fought by sending in troops group by group, small amounts of soldiers at a time, was just sending them into get killed. The troops had no idea how many Vietnamese soldiers would be on the ground to meet their attack, and they knew the terrain much better than our troops did, allowing them to surround the cavalry and kill them all more quickly. Although it was a nice idea to try and find a way to win the war without losing many lives, that's hard to do, especially when your troops keep getting killed. Even though a full on attack would have probably lead to more death, it might have been a better approach for this war.
