To say that possession of Weapons of Mass Destruction is vital for keeping peace in the world is a rather flawed concept. The same argument could have applied to the European powers before WWI, and their massive armies. Before WWI Europe’s nation-states were locked in an arms race, each country attempting to outdo the other in terms of numbers and technology level. The web of alliances divided Europe into two separate camps, both of which would spring into action if any one member was attacked. As history shows, none of these things prevented WWI; all the arms race and alliances managed to accomplish was to cause a buildup of tension between the major powers. This pressure finally exploded in the assassination of the Austrian archduke at Sarajevo; which eventually led to all-out war between the European powers. Stockpiling weapons, conventional or nuclear, was not and is not vital for peace, what is needed are cool heads and rational decisions; for no matter how destructive a weapon is, there is always someone who just foolish or crazy enough to use it.
