Width modern flexible instruments cystoscopy is not worse than inserting a catheter. With gentle handling and numbing gel inserted beforehand and some relaxation drug, it is virtually painfree. The induction and aftereffect and risks of general anesthesia is fat worse.

In my reports all degrees of anesthesia is used, from just numbing gel to general anesthesia. Yes, my reports generally include a lot of bad aftereffects, but that is because usually a lot more than just looking inside with a cystoscope is done, and lot of the bad effects are due to the anesthesia. I have no reports of cystoscopy only with spinal or epidural anesthesia, but I have reports when more is done, but this also have to many risks and aftereffects to be used by general screening.
