Subject: I've had it both ways. The times I've won however I was FIRST both times! (in larger pageants, not ones with like 3 or so). I think the bigger the pageant, the better it is to be in the middle if you are in comparison about the same level but if you feel strong, set the bar HIGH and come out 1st. Now I think some do hold scores judging but what will happen is you will be the 8 and it'll be a low scoring pageant with 6's and 7's behind you. If you're strong, I say be in the front!
