I was a 19D10 Cavalry Scout assigned to I-troop 3/2 ACR in Amberg. Our Troop was pulling Border Duty at Camp Reed on the Grenz shortly after Chernobyl blew. I remember all our food was brought in from the States - especially fresh produce and I think, milk (though we drank 'boxed' milk for quite awhile). I heard jokes about our Compasses glowing brighter (they have a radioactive subtance to make them glow) and our Radiac Meters detecting higher levels of radioactivity (the meters used for detecting nuke activity by the Warsaw Pact forces). I don't know if any of that was true; I personally never saw it, but consider this, the threat of contamination to the local food supply was serious enough to warrant importing food from the US. That kinda bothered me at the time but we were told we we in no danger. Seems funny though...we can't eat the food in the area that was exposed to the very same levels of radiation as WE were.
