Subject: Player positions as compared to AFL reality
In reply to: Mods 's message, "Rule update - effective today" on 2/07/20 8:22pm

Quite often I check on one of my players to justify his balance group. I am not seeing this player being selected in an area of the ground I think he really suites in his AFL side, but I want to keep him in the group I have him in.

The player I am referring to is Mitch Robinson. In the Brisbane side he is ALWAYS in midfield only. However, I notice he has a real strong defensive side to his game. He is playing in the Midfield at Brisbane, because there balance in the back half doesn't warrant his selection there, but if they played him off a half back flank, he would excel there IMHO.

My side is a little light on for D2's. Even more so now that Jeremy Howe has gone done. Will Day is a while away, Ethan Hughes and Josh Wagner are inconsistent, and not even as strong defensively accountable as Robinson. Vandermeer is only young as well, so won't play all games for the Bulldogs for a bit. Mid/Def are realistic with Hamish Hartlett and Lewis Jetta, but not as much with Weller and Robinson despite a real defensive aspect to their game.

I think we need to be a little bit flexible to this sort of think happening at times. I do realise we don't want teams flooding their flanks and pockets with midfielders, but on some occassions, with a bit of imagination, I don't see an issue. Robinson and Weller have been ticked off for their Mid/Def roles, so I am merely bringing this up as a consideration in the future.

Same can be said about the ruck issue I have put on the table. Yes, we can imagine a certain ruckman doing well in a key forward post. So if the ruckman snags goals from playing first ruck, that imagining scenario can be justified, even though the goals come from the Ruck position, and not when he was resting forward. Same with a midfielder that doesn't have good accountability defensively like for instance a Sidebottom or Issac Smith, would seem out of place on a half back flank should not be played there.

For Collingwood, I imagine Grundy to be capable of Key Forward if he wasn't so valuable as a starting Ruck. I read a discussion the other day, suggesting Grundy's value as a first ruck is awesome in tapout count, but when the opposition midfielders rove to his taps, it is almost worth putting Cox in the ruck, and just breaking even or just winning, and seeing how Grundy goes as a Fullforward.

He is a good mark, and kicks straight. He gets goals because of these aspects to his game, but in the Ruck, not in FF. It is plausable in our game if Grundy was put forward to me, because it would have success. However, some ruckman that run around a field weekly, getting little to no goals in ruck, the fairytale of him suddenly becoming a goal kicking key is far fetched.

So in conclusion, and as mentioned before, there are grey areas. If coaches can imagine the position would work, it should be ticked off. If it is unrealistic, then it should be refused.
